How to Install Carpet Padding on a Cement Slab

Although not absolutely necessary, carpet padding is commonly installed to add cushioning to the carpet. As a collateral benefit, padding can also act as an insulator. Carpet padding is typically secured to the underlying floor with staples, which don't work on a concrete slab. In this case, double-sided tape is used to hold the padding in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll out the carpet padding across the entire length of the floor.

    • 2

Cut away the excess padding with a utility knife, using a straightedge as a guide.

    • 3

Apply a strip of double sided tape along the walls.

    • 4

Apply two strips of double-sided tape across the floor to form a “+” shape. Note that the tape strips form four boxes.

    • 5

Apply two strips of double-sided tape in each box to form an “X” in each box.

    • 6

Roll the carpet padding across the floor. Press the edge of the padding into the tape along the farthest wall, then unroll the padding across the tape and towards the door.
