How to Remove a Carpet Threshold

A carpet threshold is designed to conceal the edge of carpeting that does not adjoin a wall. To remove the carpet, you must pull it away from the tack strips positioned underneath the edges of the carpet. Where carpet meets a threshold, tacks within the threshold rather than a separate tack strip are used to secure the carpet. The threshold is nailed into the floor and the edge of the threshold is then bent over the carpet. Removing the threshold is essentially the reverse of this process, but you must instead remove the threshold nails to release the threshold.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the tip of a pry bar between one end of the lip of the threshold and the carpet, then lift the edge of the threshold with the pry bar.

    • 2

Raise the entire length of the lip of the threshold with the pry bar, working in 6-inch increments.

    • 3

Pull the edge of the carpeting away from the threshold with pliers to avoid inadvertently rubbing against the threshold’s tacks.

    • 4

Insert the tip of the pry bar between the edge of the threshold and the underlying floor, then pry the bar upward to pull the threshold nails out of the floor and to release the threshold.
