How to Replace a Carpet Entryway

Carpeted entryways experience constant foot traffic, which causes frayed carpet fibers and stains. One way to prevent future entryway carpet problems is to place mats outside and inside the doorway. Because entryways give people their first impression of the home, it is essential that the flooring look clean. Also, carpeted entryways set the tone for the rest of the house. Therefore, homeowners must choose carpeting that reinforces their interior design choices in the rest of the home.

      Pry up one corner of the carpet using a pry bar. Press the pry bar between the carpeting and the wall. Lift up on the carpet to remove from the tackless strips. Pull up the carpeting around the perimeters of the room. Roll up the carpet and place it outside.

      Pull up the tackless strip using the pry bar in the doorway to release the carpeting from the Z bar. Z bars are used to secure carpeting in doorways. Hammer the tackless strip back down on top of the Z bar in the entryway doorway.

      Vacuum the carpet padding. Check the tackless strips around the room to make sure they are not loose. Install another row of tackless strips underneath the old ones. Cut the carpet padding to accommodate the new row of strips. Hammer the tackless strips into the subflooring. By adding another row of tackless strips, you prevent the new carpeting from bunching.

      Unroll the new carpeting into the room. Allow 2 inches of carpeting to ride up the sides of the wall. Create seams by overlapping two pieces of carpet. Cut through both pieces using a carpet knife. Apply a latex seam adhesive to the edges and place a piece of seam tape underneath the seam. Heat up the seam tape using a seam iron. Press both pieces of carpet together.

      Place a knee kicker 6 inches from the wall near one corner of the room. Press your knee into the flat part of the knee kicker, so that the teach grasp onto the carpet and attaches the carpeting into the tackless strips. Continue attaching the carpet along the wall.

      Cut the carpet next to the wall using a double blade wall trimmer. Use a stair chisel to push the carpeting underneath the wall to hide the rough edges. Continue tucking in the carpet down the wall.

      Place a carpet stretcher on the opposite wall. Press the lever that causes the teeth of the carpet stretcher to push the carpeting to the tackless strips. Attach the carpeting every 18 inches. Cut the excess carpeting with a double blade wall trimmer. Push the edges underneath the wall.

      Roll the carpet underneath the z bar in the doorway. A z bar is a strip of metal that goes underneath the tackless strip in the doorway. Hammer the edge of the carpet in the doorway, so that the z bar secures the carpet to the floor.
