How to Measure Stair Treads with Carpet

If you have carpeted stairs that you would like to know the dimensions of so you can replace the carpet or place a stair runner on the stairs, then you will need to measure the treads and risers. The tread is the width of the flat part of the stair. The riser is the vertical part beneath the step.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the riser of the stair by extracting the tape measure and placing it flush against the back of the riser and pressing the tape measure up to the top of the riser.

    • 2

Place the measuring tape on top of the stair tread -- the flat surface of the step -- and measure the width to the end of the tread.

    • 3

Add these two measurements together and then multiply that measurement by the number of stairs to get the total measurement of the carpeted stairs.
