Double Glue Down Carpet Method

The double glue down method consists of gluing the carpet padding to the subfloor, then gluing the carpet to the padding. This method is commonly used for areas where there's heavy foot traffic or an incline. It's also used in areas of high humidity such as marine docks and patio areas. You'll need to measure and cut your padding and carpet first, then apply the glue.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the subfloor before applying adhesive. You'll want to make sure the subfloor is free of debris and moisture. If you're subfloor is concrete, you should test for alkalinity and moisture before applying adhesive. Calcium chloride testing kits are used to test for alkalinity and moisture; however, it's important to note that these tests can take up to 72 hours.

    • 2

Prepare the padding and carpet. Roll the padding out on the floor; using a utility knife, cut it so that it's flush with corners and edges of walls. Do the same with the carpet and set both aside until ready to apply the adhesive.

    • 3

Apply the adhesive to the clean subfloor. In the double glue down method, adhesive is typically applied with a u-notched trowel. However, follow the manufacturer's instructions if directed otherwise.

    • 4

Roll out the pre-cut padding. Press the padding down on the adhesive, making sure you lay the padding down as you cut it. Smooth it out, making sure there are no ripples or bubbles. Allow the adhesive to dry completely, according to the manufacturer's guidelines, before gluing carpet to padding.

    • 5

Apply adhesive to padding with a u-notched trowel. Be sure to spread the adhesive all the way to the edges of the padding.

    • 6

Roll out your pre-cut carpet on top of the adhesive covered padding. Press the carpet down and smooth it out to prevent bubbles.
