How to Do Carpet Around Stair Posts

Carpeting stairs is a straightforward task for those skilled in home improvement. Stairs with a rail and posts, also referred to as spindles or balusters, can make the installation a bit more complicated. Carpet around the stair’s post immediately after carpeting each stair. Ensure the carpet measurements for each stair include the stair's width, length and extra carpet to wrap around the outside edge of the stair next to each post.

      Press the carpet against the stair post. Apply pressure from the far end of the carpeted stair to smooth the carpet. Push it tightly against the post using your hand.

      Slice the carpet with a utility knife along the side of the post. Use the post as a guide to cut the carpet straight. The cut carpet on the side of the post will lie flat next to the post.

      Cut the carpet the width of the post closest to you. Press the carpet against the other side of the post. Cut the carpet the width of the post with the utility knife. The carpet on the other side of the post will fall flat.

      Join the carpet ends that were cut to ensure the ends meet. Cut the carpet on the outside of the post. The carpet should surround the post and lie over the edge of the stair.

      Walk down the stairs to the outside of where the carpet was cut around the post. Apply carpet adhesive around the carpet pieces. Press the carpet down firmly to attach the carpet around the end of the stair. Ensure the cut carpet near the post connects from the post to the end of the stair for a seamless appearance. Cut extra carpet under the stair’s edge with the utility knife.
