How to Blend the Top Tread With the Upstairs Carpet

It's common to see different materials used for flooring in different areas of a home. When these different sections of the floor meet, you must be able to join the floor to make a seamless transition. This is especially important when the joint is at the top of a staircase, in order to prevent someone from tripping and falling down the stairs. You can install a metal transition bar to blend the joints.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the transition bar with a hacksaw equipped with a metal-cutting blade to fit the length of the joint.

    • 2

Lay the transition bar into position at the joint underneath the edge of the carpet.

    • 3

Screw the bar to the flooring, using galvanized screws.

    • 4

Place a straightedge on the carpet 1/4 inch from the transition bar. Cut the carpet with a utility knife, using the straightedge as a guide.

    • 5

Stretch the carpet with a knee-kicker so the carpet edge reaches the transition bar. Use a stair chisel to slide the edge of the carpet underneath the transition bar and hook the underside of the carpet onto the pins inside the bar.

    • 6

Bend the flange of the transition bar onto the carpet by laying a wooden block over top and tapping it with a hammer.
