How to Install Metal Strips Around Carpet on Cement

One of the last steps when installing a carpet is to install a metal transition along the edges of the carpet where it meets flooring made of a different material, such as hardwood, tile or cement. The metal transition not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also locks the carpet down onto the floor and prevents people from tripping over it.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Carpet transition bar
  • Hacksaw
  • Hammer drill
  • Masonry screws
  • Utility knife
  • Knee-kicker
  • Stair chisel
  • Wooden block
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the edge that you need to install the transition bar to and cut the bar to that length with a hacksaw.

    • 2

Screw the transition bar to the concrete with masonry screws, using a hammer drill to install the screws. Place the bar underneath the edge of the carpet.

    • 3

Cut the edge of the carpet with a utility knife so that it's about a 1/4-inch away from the transition bar.

    • 4

Stretch the carpet into the transition bar at the corner with a knee-kicker and then tuck the edge of the carpet into the bar and onto the pins inside it with a stair chisel.

    • 5

Place a wooden block on top of the bar and tap it down with a hammer to bend the flange down on top of the carpet.
