Measure the depth of drop, or lip, from the top of the wood to the subfloor. Purchase a transition piece that almost matches the drop depth so the carpet is bonded tightly against the floor.
Cut the transition piece and channel to fit the length covered, using the saw.
Install the channel tightly along the edge of the wood floor and just above the subfloor. A nail at each end and every 12 inches is often used as a guide. Some transition channels come with pre-drilled holes for you to follow.
Push the edge of the carpet firmly against the edge of the channel without unduly wrinkling it or warping the texture. Hold it steady.
Lay the length of the transition piece on the lip of the wood, then push it into a snug fit into the channel with the edge of the transition piece pressing the carpet into the subfloor.
