How to Install Outdoor Carpeting

Outdoor turf or carpeting provides comfort under your feet on a patio or anywhere else you decide to install carpet in and around your yard. Most people lay an outdoor carpeting inside a screen enclosure or on a patio deck. Laying outdoor carpeting is easy. There are many different types and styles to choose from and a few different ways to install it. Laying the outdoor carpet requires less precision than an indoor carpet and although you will still want the carpet to look nice, it will take less work to accomplish the goal.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface. Make sure it is smooth, clean and dry. Use glue or double faced tape on concrete, wood decking or asphalt. Apply an outdoor sealer to slotted wooden decks, waxed or painted wood.

    • 2

Roll out the chosen carpet in the area where you will install it. Let it sit for an hour to allow expansion.

    • 3

Place double sided tape around the perimeter of the room. Make an X out of the tape every 2 feet. Do not remove the protective paper from the tape.

    • 4

Layout the carpet, centered, so equal amounts of carpet curl up the sides of all the walls at the ends, if applicable. Allow 3 inches at each end for trimming.

    • 5

Make a vertical cut in the carpet down the wall to the floor, and trim across at the crevice where the wall meets the floor. Use a heavy duty utility knife.

    • 6

Make V cuts at the corners so the carpet lays flat. You might need to make a few close together V cuts for proper fitting.

    • 7

Pull back one half the carpet. Remove the protective paper from the tape and fold the carpet back in place. Repeat the process on the other side.

    • 8

Adhere the carpet to the tape with a 50 pound carpet roller.

    • 9

Hold your utility knife parallel to the floor and trim again around all the edges to make sure all excess carpet is removed.

    • 10

Apply a quality outdoor adhesive to the outer edges of the carpet to secure it to the ground. Tuck the edges up under the surrounding walls if applicable. Walk around the edges of the outdoor carpet to ensure that it adheres properly.
