Carpet Binding Instructions

Binding carpet is necessary so the material doesn't fray and come undone. Depending on what and where the carpet is used, it can be bound in different ways. Creating runners and throw rugs out of scrap pieces of carpet isn't as hard as it sounds, due to new carpet binding methods that are now available.
  1. Sewing Machines

    • Professionals use special sewing machines for carpet binding. This creates a perfect, clean edge on the carpet, however, it can be costly. If you don't have a carpet-binding machine (which most people don't), this may not be a realistic method of carpet binding.

    Glue

    • Instabind is a product that's available online which comes in three different designs. You can choose rope, serge or regular binding in 22 different colors to match any carpet you are are working with. Simply glue the binding to the edge of the carpet with a hot glue gun and let it dry. Instabind creates instant runners that look professional at a fraction of the cost. Practice on a small piece of scrap carpet to begin with until you familiarize yourself with the process.

    Tape

    • Sailrite has created an acrylic binding that you simply glue onto the carpet. The acrylic is durable and can be used indoors or outdoors, as it is UV and mildew proof. Adhesive sticky tape is used on the carpet bind's flange, then cemented in place using special glue sticks made for use on acrylic. This process is much easier and cheaper than binding machines.
