How to Reduce New Carpet Odor

Whether you have just installed new carpets or moved into a new furnished home, there is a great likelihood of smelling a distinct odor. New carpet has a strong scent from the chemicals used in creating the carpet. According to the Aeries website about carpets, most residential carpets are made with fibers consisting of nylon or olefin. There are also adhesives, a styrene-butadiene rubber latex base, and woven polypropylene or jute fibers. However, there are simple and inexpensive ways to reduce the smell.

Things You'll Need

  • Febreze Fabric Refresher, Lysol Disinfectant Spray, Glade Carpet & Room Deodorizer, or other similar product (in desired scent)
  • Candles (in desired scent)
  • Incense (in desired scent)
  • Electric stand-up fan

Instructions

      Place objects or furniture as far off the carpet as possible, or completely, for maximum effect if possible.

      Open the window, and with a fan on, have the carpet naturally air out completely for at least a day or two. If odor persists, continue the following steps.

      Using either your odor eliminator product, spray the entire carpet area with an even amount. If you have moved your furniture, put all furniture back to its original place or rearrange the furniture to your liking.

      Place a fan directly across the window on the carpet. Put candles or incense in desired areas.

      Maintain the reduction of new carpet odor by lighting the candles or incense after turning the fan off first to avoid a fire hazard. Continue the process of spraying the odor eliminator until the smell disappears.
