How to Remove Two-way Carpet Tape

Two-way carpet tape, also known as double-sided carpet tape, is used to hold carpet in place when tack strips and other methods can't be used. Two-way carpet tape is durable and forms a tight bond, but leaves a residue when removed. When removing carpet from a room or area in your home, you don't want to leave behind fragments of carpet tape or tape residue. To remove two-way carpet tape quickly, use a substance that will dissolve and remove the residue without damaging the floor surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull any remaining fragments of carpet tape slowly from the floor or other surface.

    • 2

Apply 1 tbsp. of an adhesive dissolver or butane to a shop towel or rag. Wear a nose mask and latex gloves to keep from inhaling the adhesive dissolver or butane and to protect your hands.

    • 3

Blot the two-way tape and residue with the rag or towel soaked in adhesive dissolver or butane. Do not rub -- this will lead to color transfer.

    • 4

Reapply adhesive dissolver or butane to the towel or rag.

    • 5

Continue blotting the tape and residue until it is gone.

    • 6

If wet, dry the floor or other surface with paper towels.

    • 7

Before installing another type of flooring, mop the floor with a damp mop or large towel, if possible.
