How to Lay Carpet at a Door Entry

Laying carpet is an effective way to refresh a room's appearance. Because carpet is subject to extensive wear and tear, its lifespan depends on your foot traffic, decor changes and weather conditions that cause flooding. It is important to lay carpet properly in door entries, so that it does not cause accidents by buckling or unraveling. Likewise, carpet must be installed correctly to facilitate the door's ability to open and close. Install your carpet and give your room a whole new look.

Instructions

    • 1

Unroll your carpet to allow the carpet fibers to expand for an hour. Remove the door to make carpet installation easier. Place double-sided adhesive tape around the perimeters of the room. Leave the top protective paper on the tape.

    • 2

Center the carpet and place it so it is laid directly against the doorway. Allow the edge to curl 6 inches up the wall. Press down on the carpet where it meets the floor and the wall and make vertical cuts with a utility knife.

    • 3

Create a seam in the middle of the doorway to the other room. Overlap 2 inches of carpet. Cut through both pieces with a utility knife. Trim the carpet so it fits around molding.

    • 4

Apply seam adhesive to the seams and butt them together. Take off the top protective paper and press down on the carpet. Roll a carpet roller around the perimeters of the room and at the doorway. Tuck the carpet under the wall.

    • 5

Replace the door and open and close it. If the door will not close, shorten it with a saw. Mark with a pencil how much you need to take off. Remove the door and score it with a utility knife.

    • 6

Take the door off and mark with a clamp a straight metal edge on the door to guide you when you are cutting through the wood. Cut through the wood with the circular saw. Sand the edges and replace the door. Seal the bottom with a finish.
