Types of Carpet Underpads

Underpads, also commonly called "underlay," help absorb impact that makes carpet fibers break down over time. They also add extra comfort to wall-to-wall carpet or a rug. Carpet underlays can be made of waffle rubber, urethane foam and bonded urethane, which is also called Rebond. Rugs usually require thinner underlays, so not all underlays that can be used for carpets can double for rug underlays. Underlays are available in different sizes and densities. Manufacturers usually suggest an underlay cushion of at least 6 lbs. and 3/8-inch thickness for light traffic areas, and a cushion of 8 lbs. and 3/8-inch thickness for heavy traffic areas.
  1. Rebond Underlay

    • Rebond underlay is made from rebounded foam pieces for wall to wall carpeting. The foam is called “rebond” because it may be made from recycled industrial waste that is rebonded and then sold as new carpet underlay. It is light, easy to handle, provides excellent heat insulation and feels great under your carpet. Rebond is measured by thickness and not weight unlike other underlays. The two main thicknesses are 9 mm and 11 mm, with 11 mm being the luxury, or most comfortable, kind of rebond.

    Teebaud Underlay

    • Teebaud is the best nonskid underlay for wall to wall carpeting. It is thin, light, fluffy and easy to install. It is made from two nonwoven polyester fabrics that are permanently needle-punched together. The fabric will not rot, crumble, flatten out or shed fibers. Both sides of Teebaud underlay are coated with water-based adhesive. This means it will grip both the rug backing and the floor. However, the adhesive allows you to easily pick up your rug without sticking. It also protects against moisture and mildew.

    Duracushion Underlay

    • Duracushion underlay may also be known as Crumb Rubber Underlay because they are both made from the same material. Duracushion is made from recycled rubber tires for use in wall to wall carpeting. Car tires are granulated and then rebonded to be sold as underlay. They are ideal for heavy foot impact areas such as shops, offices and homes that have wheel chairs. They give wonderful support and resist compression better than any other kind of underlay, and they come in different thicknesses and densities.
