How to Install AstroTurf

AstroTurf is an effective flooring for decks and patios. It's made from weather-resistant nylon or polypropylene. Not only is the turf softer on feet than hardwood, it also helps the outdoor area blend in with the rest of your landscaping. Proper installation is essential to prevent the material from bulging or not covering the entire area. Lay down AstroTurf for a soft surface that doesn't take the focus off the landscaping.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean off the patio or deck for installation. Hammer any nails that may be sticking up. Unroll the AstroTurf so the fibers can expand for two hours. Allow the turf to climb 6 inches up the walls, so when you cut it to fit you have some extra pieces for repairs.

    • 2

Press down on the turf where the wall and the floor meet and use a utility knife to make parallel cuts into the turf.

    • 3

Create seams by overlapping two separate pieces of turf by 2 inches. Cut through the turf with a utility knife. Apply seam adhesive to both pieces of carpet and press the edges together. Roll a carpet roller over the seam to help the pieces adhere to each other.

Apply an outdoor adhesive to the perimeter of the deck or patio space. Press the AstroTurf into the adhesive. Roll a carpet roller over the perimeter of the outdoor area. Allow the turf to adhere for 24 hours before use. Keep some of the turf on hand for repairs.
