How to Patch Carpet on a Concrete Floor

Carpet offers many benefits for homeowners, including warmth and comfort underfoot. One of its biggest drawbacks, however, is the difficulty of patching or repairing a damaged section of carpeted flooring. Carpet routinely suffers damage from cigarette burns, snags, stains or general wear and tear. Fortunately, a simple carpet repair kit allows you to remove and replace damaged carpet without hiring a professional to help.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open your carpet repair kit and remove the round cutting tool. Use a screwdriver to attach the cutting blade (if its not already attached) to the tool. The bottom of the cutting edge of the blade should line up with the bottom of the guide screw that's located in the center of the tool.

    • 2

Place the cutting tool over the carpet so that the damaged area is completely encompassed by the tool. Press the tool tightly to the floor and twist it in a full circle to cut out a round section of carpet.

    • 3

Remove the circular section of carpet that you just cut out. Locate a piece of replacement carpet that exactly matches this section. If you don't have extra material in the garage or attic, look under your furniture, or check out-of-the-way spots like closets.

    • 4

Place the cutting tool on the replacement section of carpet. Choose an area that matches the damaged section as closely as possible. Press down on the cutting tool and twist it in a full circle to cut away a replacement piece of carpet.

    • 5

Apply a small amount of water to the adhesive backing disk from your repair kit. Slide it into the hole you cut out on your existing carpet. Work the edges of the disk under the carpet so that the entire perimeter of the disk is covered by carpet.

    • 6

Run a thin line of carpet glue around the perimeter of the hole in your carpet. The glue should be placed on the adhesive backing disk, not on your carpet. Take care not to get glue on the surface of your carpet.

    • 7

Align the replacement section of carpet with the hole in your existing carpet. Make sure all patterns, weaves and other features line up properly, then press the replacement section firmly into place.

    • 8

Roll around the edges of the replacement section with the "star roller" from your repair kit. This tool will blend the fibers from the old carpet with those of the new section, helping conceal the edges of the patch.
