Carpet Flooring Types

Carpets are common types of floor coverings available in many different styles. Carpets are made from a variety of different materials, from wool to silk and nylon to polyester. Carpets are also sold in different sizes, from scatter rugs to larger floor rugs. Carpet flooring is typically wall-to-wall laid carpet, which is professionally fixed and fitted.
  1. Shagpile

    • Shagpile is a type of carpet that has thick, long 'piles' or fiber threads that are cut loose, looking like shaggy hair; normally the shagpile threads are around 1 to 2 inches long. Shagpile is a very textured carpet, suitable for floor covering in nurseries, bedrooms or playrooms where very soft, forgiving carpet is required.

    Cut Pile

    • Cut pile carpet flooring is a favorite style of carpet in which the loops of the carpet threads are cut short, leaving small upright tufts. According to Repair Home, cut pile carpets stay durable by using tough fiber in the weaving with a high density of fiber tufts. Cut pile carpets are suitable for any room of the house.

    Plush

    • Plush carpets are also known as velvet cut pile carpets, and they have a very smooth, luxurious look to them. Although they tend to show footprints a little more than other types of carpet flooring, plush carpets are best in formal areas like the living or dining room, where they present an air of sophistication.

    Frieze

    • According to Flooring and Carpets, frieze carpets are made from cut and twisted pile that is very hard wearing. Because the pile is slightly curly and twisted, it resists leaving footprints or holding vacuuming marks, making it suitable for areas where there is a lot of thoroughfare. Play areas, lounge rooms and offices all suit frieze carpet flooring.

    Level Loop Pile

    • According to Carpet.org, level loop pile is very durable and doesn't show up tracks and marks from vacuuming or walking. Even height loops of fiber are woven into both ends of carpet backing to form level loop pile. Level loop carpets with shorter pile are dirt resistant and simple to clean.

    Berber

    • Berber carpets are normally made from wool, making them more expensive than other types, although less expensive nylon and olefin Berber carpets are available. Berber carpet flooring is made from thicker fiber than other carpet types and is very durable as a result.
