How to Remove Carpet Backing From a Wood Floor

Carpet backing can be made with a number of different materials; generally, polyurethane or natural fibers. Because carpeting is often laid with carpet glue, backing can adhere to wood floors.To restore wood floors it is essential to remove this backing. For new carpeting, install the carpet with tackless strips to prevent glue from causing the backing to stick to the wood.

  • Hardwood cleaner
  • Soft-bristle brush

      Lift the carpet up from one corner of the room. Roll the carpeting up and remove from room for storage or disposal.

      Mix water and wood cleaner in a bucket per label directions. A wood cleaner with a neutral pH balance can keep the floors from looking dull. Remove polyurethane or natural fibers backing from the floor with a soft bristle brush.

      Remove difficult backing with mineral spirits. Apply the spirits with a sponge and wipe with a soft rag. Clean the wood flooring with the wood cleaner and a mop.

      Gently remove any of the adhesive or carpet backing with a razor blade. Place a rag over the razor blade to help prevent scratching.

      Sweep up remaining carpet fibers and adhesive with a broom or vacuum.
