How to Repair Carpet With a Power Stretcher

Carpet tends to buckle from tackless strips through general wear and tear. Heavy foot traffic often causes the carpet to lift up from the tackless strips and wrinkle. Other reasons may include moving heavy furniture or home improvement projects. Buckled carpeting poses as a safety concern and can cause people to trip when walking. It is imperative to repair fix the safety hazard with a power stretcher and restore the look of your flooring.

      Remove the furniture from the room. Vacuum the carpet to reduce the amount of carpet fibers kicked up through the stretching process.

      Remove the carpeting from the tackless strips with a carpet awl. Push the carpet awl in between the wall and underneath the carpeting to disengage the tackless strip from underneath the carpeting.

      Place the knee kicker's teeth one inch from the wall. Press down on the knee kicker with your knee, so that it extends the carpeting to the tackless strip.

      Place a power stretcher head four inches from the wall and extend the stretcher to the opposite corner of the wall. The power stretcher head is the side with the teeth. Adjust the dial pins, so that the teeth go into the carpeting at the head.

      Press down on the power stretcher level. Wait for the head to push the carpeting on the tackless strips before releasing the lever.
