Remove any personal items from the area. This includes furniture, bedding and anything else that can potentially come into contact with the mold. If any of these items have had contact with the carpet mold, inspect and clean them as well.
Brush away loose mold particles using a broom. Brush the flakes into a dustpan. Immediately dispose of the residue by placing it outdoors in a thick trash bag, according to a report from the University of Missouri.
Vacuum the carpet to remove additional spores. If your vacuum cleaner includes extensions, use a hose or other small extension to get close up and eliminate additional mold particles that lurk deep in the carpet and along corners.
Remove the bag from your vacuum cleaner and immediately place it inside a thick trash bag outdoors. If your vacuum cleaner does not contain a bag, remove the dirt container, empty the contents into your trash bag and clean the container thoroughly using hot water and disinfectant.
Apply a carpet shampoo to the affected area. Use enough to allow a thorough lather. Work the shampoo into the carpet using a thick sponge or cloth.
Dampen a soft cloth with warm water and scrub the carpet to remove the shampoo. Rinse and wring out your cloth several times as needed during the scrubbing process.
Dry your carpet. If you own or have access to a carpet dryer fan, hold it over the affected area until no dampness remains. If you have a dehumidifier, place it near the carpet and turn it on while running your air conditioner. If you have a wet/dry vacuum, use it to suck up the liquid and continue rolling it over the affected area until you achieve total dryness. Drying the carpet thoroughly will prevent mold from returning.
