How to Lay Berber Carpet

Berber is a type of carpet created from tufts of wool, nylon, polyester and other fiber types. According to HGTV, berber carpets offer more visual interest with more extreme differences in pile cut and thicker, deeper loop textures. Technical ability, craftsmanship and professional experience are prerequisites to install wall-to-wall berber carpeting. Avoid high carpet installation costs and install your own berber carpet by using tiles. Berber carpet tiles are manufactured with a self-adhesive backing that adheres to the floor surface when pressed into place for a simple installation.

Instructions

  Remove the trim around the walls. Find the center of the room by measuring the walls and marking the center length and width. Mark the center of the room with a chalk line, connecting the center points width and lengthwise and creating a large "X." The room is now divided into four quadrants.

  Apply primer to the floor. Primer is not always needed with self-adhesive berber tile sections but can be used to ensure the carpet is held firmly in place. Lay primer from the back to the front of room to avoid walking over the laid squares before they dry.

  Lay the first square of carpet along one of the chalk lines to ensure it is straight. Continue carefully laying carpet squares adjacent to one another until you reach the walls on all sides of the room. Cut the square to size if you reach the wall and it doesn't fit.

  Measure cuts. Ensure that you take your time measuring the carpet against the wall. There should be a small gap between the cut carpet and the wall to make room for the trim. Align the factory edges of the carpet tile together with your cut adjacent to the wall for a clean fit.

  Put the trim back up once you are done for a more professional look.
