Carpet tack strips contain small sharp nails that are spaced approximately six inches apart. When handling the tack strip to remove it from the floor, you will need gloves to protect your hands from the sharp ends of the nails as well as any splinters from the wood.
Position the end of the pry bar, sometimes called a wonder bar, under the tack strip, next to a nail to use as leverage for loosening the strip.
The hammer will add force to the pry bar and assist in loosening the tack strip. Strike the heel of the bar once it is inserted under the tack strip. Any hammer will suffice, but a heavier grade tool will often prove more efficient. You can also use the claw of the hammer to remove any pieces of tack strip from the floor that break loose from the main piece.
Safety glasses are optional, but probably warranted. When working with sharp objects and pieces that may break apart and become airborne, it's wise to wear eye protection.
