Instructions for Laying Outdoor Carpet

You can install outdoor carpet on virtually any outdoor space, such as patios, porches and balconies. This carpeting is available in a variety of grades, textures and fibers, unlike the traditional dark green turf. Outdoor carpet is durable and waterproof, yet comfortable enough to walk on with your bare feet. Basements are also prime areas for outdoor carpet, since the carpet requires low maintenance. Laying outdoor carpet is less difficult than installing indoor wall-to-wall carpet and requires minimal tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the floor with a broom to remove any dirt, grime or debris. Inspect the floor for any protruding screws, nails or defects on the surface.

    • 2

Check the outdoor temperature, using a thermometer. Install the outdoor carpet when the temperature is below 85 degrees and the humidity level is low. High humidity will prevent the carpet adhesives from adhering to the floor.

    • 3

Roll out the carpet over the desired area. Make sure the carpet extends to every corner of the area and covers the entire space.

    • 4

Draw a line on the carpet with a piece of chalk to determine where you will cut the carpet. Cut the carpet to fit the area, using a utility knife.

    • 5

Roll back one side the carpet to expose the floor. Apply good-quality double-sided tape to the floor along the edge of the space.

    • 6

Lay the carpet carefully over the tape. Press down on the carpet to ensure it is fully adhered to the floor. Continue taping down the other three sides of the carpet the same way you did the first edge.
