Carpet Installation Specifications

Carpet enhances the beauty and comfort of homes. It also keeps rooms warmer in the winter, providing an additional layer of insulation. Installing carpet requires planning beforehand and a detailed understanding of the steps needed to ensure the carpet looks sharp. Researching carpets, obtaining the proper tools and installing the carpet correctly affects carpet performance and lifespan.
  1. Preparations

    • Sketch a diagram detailing the room dimensions, openings and unusual angles. Understand where carpet seams will be located. Inspect the carpet, making sure it is in good shape and the correct amount for the job. You should have at least a foot more carpet in length and width than the dimensions of your room. Sweep the room thoroughly before you lay out the carpet. Unroll and cut the carpet in the strips you will need, allowing the strips to relax and lay out.

    Tools and Materials

    • Obtain a carpenter's square and measuring tape for measuring the carpet, and a utility knife for cutting. Purchase or rent a power stretcher for pulling the carpet tight during installation. In addition to the carpet, you will need padding for most jobs and tackless strips and cutters. If gluing, get quality carpet glue. Invest in good knee pads and leather gloves for protection and comfort.

    Storage and Handling

    • Store carpet before installation in a cool, dry space. Store the carpet on a flat surface. Do not stack other objects on the carpet. Avoid bending or folding the carpet while in storage.

    Measurement, Planning and Layout

    • Ensure measurements of the room you are carpeting are correct. Measure out the carpet and cut to fit the room, leaving at least 3 inches along each wall for trimming. Decide on seam placements, keeping their locations away from high-traffic areas.

    Temperature and Humidity

    • Install carpet only when room temperature is between 65 and 95 degrees. Install when the humidity range is between 10 and 65 percent. Use a dehumidifier to help with humidity levels. The same conditions need to be maintained at least 72 hours after installation.

    Tack Strips or Glue

    • Install tack strips around the perimeter of the room, except in doorways. Use strips that are at least one inch wide and 1/4 inch thick. If you are gluing the carpet, invest in quality carpet glue. Make sure the floor is clean and dry before gluing.

    Stretching and Installing

    • Use a power stretcher to ensure the best possible fit of the carpet, and avoid wrinkles or loose areas. Secure carpet firmly on tack strips or press securely to edges if using glue. Use a bead of seam adhesive for all seam edges to minimize visibility.
