How to Pull Out Carpet That Is Glued

Carpet removal can be a difficult and time-consuming task. Carpet glued down to the floor can make this process even tougher, especially if the glue is extremely strong. Removing the carpet and adhesive is two separate projects. The first will require manual labor and some basic tools, while the second will require the use of chemicals to loosen and remove the adhesive.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull up carefully on the carpet in one corner of the room. If the carpet comes up easily, continue to remove the carpet, then proceed to Step 5. If the carpet does not budge, move on to Step 2.

    • 2

Use the knife to slice the carpet into 1-foot strips while glued to the floor. Go slowly to avoid injuring yourself.

    • 3

Remove each strip of the carpet by pulling on it. Use slow, careful tugs to help prevent the carpet from tearing.

    • 4

Scrape carpet spots still attached to the floor with an industrial scraper. Try scraping the glue to see how easily it will come up.

    • 5

Apply chemicals to a small area of the glue on the floor. After the recommended waiting period, scrape the glue off the floor with a putty knife. Wipe the putty knife off on the towel and continue this process until you've removed all the glue.
