How to Remove Outside Carpet

Boiling water is the remedy to remove outside carpet. The hot water softens the adhesive glue holding the carpet to the subfloor. After the glue has been softened, the edges of the carpet are lifted and a putty knife is used to separate the carpet from the subfloor. Outside or outdoor carpet gets worn out, faded and mildewy with time. Rolling up the carpet and scraping from side-to-side is the technique that gets the job done.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill three large cooking pots with water, place them on the stove and bring the water to a boil.

    • 2

Set a 5-gallon bucket on the floor and pour the hot water into the bucket.

    • 3

Carry the bucket outside. Hold the bucket low to the ground and slowly pour the hot water over the carpet. Repeat this process until the entire carpet has been saturated with hot water.

    • 4

Wait 15 minutes for the hot water to soften the carpet glue and then put on rubber gloves.

    • 5

Hold a putty knife at a 45-degree angle and slide it beneath the edge of the carpet. Grip the carpet fibers with pliers and pull up on the carpet while scraping beneath it with the putty knife. Repeat this process all the way across one edge of the carpet until about 18 inches have been lifted up.

    • 6

Tuck the 18 inches of carpet into itself to begin rolling the carpet. Continue scraping and pushing on the carpet roll all the way across the surface until the carpet has been removed. Ask an assistant to help lift the carpet and then throw it into a trash receptacle. If the carpet is on steps then begin at the top of the steps and work downward -- using gravity to your advantage.
