How to Recycle Nylon Carpet

Nylon is one of the most common materials in the top layer of carpeting in homes. Throughout the 1990s, research companies worked on methods for effectively recycling the materials, and as of 2007, there is a cost-effective way of separating the nylon from its backing and melting it down for recycling. This method, however, is not widespread as of 2011, so the most effective current method is to donate your nylon carpet for reuse, or to creatively reuse it yourself.

Donate carpet in good condition to a nonprofit organization or charity. Habitat for Humanity and the Building Materials Reuse Association accept nylon carpet, and they use it in schools, low-income homes and community centers. Good condition for nylon carpet means no large stains or tears.

Call your local recycling centers or 1-800-Clean-Up for information about recycling nylon carpet in your area. Areas with carpet recycling usually charge for recycling, so this option is best if you're willing to pay to make sure the carpet is being completely recycled.

Repurpose pieces of carpet small enough for you to cut up. Cut a piece to cover the floor of a van or car for extra protection against dirt and weather. Cut it into smaller rugs to put near doors or as mats in your car. Place strips of carpet between rows in your home garden to stop weeds.
