How to Heat Seam Carpet

Carpet seaming is often one of the most difficult parts of the carpet installation process. Many professionals use a heat seaming method with carpet tape that contains special glue. You can connect a carpet seam like a professional by renting the necessary tools from a local hardware store or carpet supply shop. Practicing on scrap pieces of carpet will familiarize you with the tools and teach you how to best heat seam the carpet.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in the carpet seaming iron. Allow it to heat for a few minutes while you prepare the carpet.

    • 2

Trim the carpet edges with scissors to ensure a snug fit between the two carpet pieces.

    • 3

Place carpet tape beneath the two carpet pieces, adhesive side up. Align the tape so each carpet piece covers one-half of the tape.

    • 4

Set the carpet iron on the tape. Move the iron slowly along the seam, heating the glue and allowing it to melt into the backside of the carpet.

    • 5

Place a heavy object over the carpet seam. This ensures the carpet stays in close contact with the carpet tape as the glue dries and hardens.
