DIY Carpet Stretching

Carpet stretching is necessary because most carpet installations use tack strips on the outer edges of the room to connect the carpet to the floor. Because the carpet will not attach to anything in the middle of the room, it's necessary to stretch the carpet taut across the room. To complete this process properly, rent a knee kicker and power stretcher from a local equipment rental store or hardware store. Kneepads will also help protect your knees during this project.

Lay the carpet on the floor, with one end on the tack strips. Attach the carpet end to the tack strips, using the knee kicker.

Trim the excess carpet off around the tack strip with a utility knife. Roll the carpet across the room. Ask a friend to help you complete this part of the project.

Place the power stretcher in the middle of the room. Press one end into the carpet attached to the tack strips.

Stretch the carpet in a fan pattern across the room. Start in the middle and work to the right, then back to the left. Attach the carpet as you stretch it, using the knee kicker.
