Instructions for Restretching Carpet

Over time, carpet tends to loosen and develop bubbles in the middle of rooms. Not only can these bubbles take away from the décor in the room but it can also be dangerous to walk on. You can re-stretch your carpet with a few tools rented from a local equipment supply store. A knee kicker and power stretcher are the two tools most common in carpet re-stretching. Asking a friend to help with this project can make it go faster and possibly result in fewer problems.

Instructions

  1. Knee Kicker Stretching

    • 1

Remove the furniture from the room. Place it outside of the room where you will re-stretch the carpet.

    • 2

Use the knee kicker to correct bubbles close to the edges around a room. Place the knee kicker on the carpet close to the wall and stretch the carpet. Make sure it attaches to the tack strip beneath the carpet.

    • 3

Cut the excess carpet around the stretched carpet with a utility knife. Tuck the carpet edge under the baseboard.

    • 4

      Replace the furniture.

    Power Stretching Carpet

Place one end of the power stretcher against a wall. Pull the other end to toward the opposite wall.

    • 7

Stretch the carpet with the power stretcher. Move the stretched in a fan pattern, working left and then right across the room.

    • 8
