The Best Way to Rip Up Carpet

The best way to rip up carpet starts with a good understanding of how carpet is installed. Special wood tack strips around the perimeter of the room hold the carpet in place. The tack strips have little nails that point toward the walls. Carpet installers use these tack strips to stretch the carpet out and hold it in place. The only thing needed to get the edges of the carpet off these tack strips is a pair of pliers.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk to one of the corners of the room and get on your hands and knees with a pair of pliers.

    • 2

Grip the corner carpet fibers in the jaws of the pliers. Pull straight up toward the ceiling to lift the carpet off the tack strip nails; then pull straight in toward the center of the room. Repeat this process in each corner.

    • 3

Go back to the first corner and work along the wall using the same process of gripping, pulling up and then pulling out. Repeat this process until all the edges of the carpet are free of the tack strip.

Roll the carpet up and haul it out to a trash receptacle.
