How to Calculate Linear Feet in a Cabinet

Cabinet space is usually measured in square feet, which is an area calculation. However, measuring the linear feet, or total cabinet length, offers a quicker measurement of cabinet space. Some commercial establishments may quote custom cabinets in linear feet, because it makes more sense to consumers, who can't easily compare an area calculation with the available space in their kitchens. Linear feet is also used when determining coatings, such as varnishes and oils, for your cabinets.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the run of the cabinets along their back wall.

    • 2

Repeat the measurement for each length of cabinets. Frequently, there will be cabinets under and above the countertop. Some may also be situated over an inlaid refrigerator or along a bench seat in the kitchen. All these areas should be counted.

    • 3

Measure any exposed sides, even if they do not contain doors. This will be the depth of the cabinets. Measure from the back wall to the front face of the cabinets. This measurement will be used for calculating linear feet for cabinet coating.

    • 4

Add the length of each run of cabinets together to calculate the cabinet's linear feet. If you are measuring to purchase varnish, oils or other coatings, you will also add any exposed sides. As an example, If you had one run of cabinets 10 feet long and 2 feet deep, the actual linear feet of the cabinets would just be 10 feet. However, for purchasing coatings for the cabinet, you would add the exposed side to give a linear feet measurement of 12 feet.
