Quality Carpet Installation

Replacing or adding carpet to a room allows you to create a home with decor that represents your style and preference. While many homeowners may choose to have carpet installed by professionals, you can complete the process yourself using the proper tools. You will probably need to rent some tools from a local equipment supply store, such as a knee kicker, seaming iron and a power stretcher. Other tools required for proper installation are easier to locate or purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old carpet, pad and tack strips. Cut old carpets into strips, pull it up and remove it from the room. Take out the old caret pad and then remove tack strips with a pry bar and hammer.

    • 2

Install new tack strips. Measure around the base of the room with a tape measure. Cut tack strips to appropriate lengths with a handsaw and hammer the strips into place.

    • 3

Roll out the carpet pad. Cut it to fit just inside the new tack strips using scissors or a knife. Tape pad seams with appropriate carpet tape.

    • 4

Lay new carpet onto the floor. Use the knee kicker to attach one side of the carpet onto the tack strip along the wall. Trim excess carpet along this wall with a knife and then tuck the carpet edge under the baseboard with a putty knife.

    • 5

Stretch the carpet across the room using the power stretcher. Work in fan pattern, starting from the inside and work toward the edges of the room. Use the knee kicker to attach the carpet to the tack strip.

    • 6

Connect carpet seams with seaming tape and a seaming iron. Place the seaming tape adhesive side up beneath the seam and place the iron onto the tape, heating the glue. Place a heavy object over the seam to help it connect properly.

Trim all excess carpet around the room with a knife. Tuck all edges under the baseboard with the putty knife.
