How to Install a Floor Register on Top of the Carpet

After you install carpet in a room, you may need to cut openings for floor registers. Floor registers are vents from the heating and air conditioning system that allow warm or cool air to enter into the room. When installing carpet, place a marker on the wall so you know the general area of the register.

     Lightly press into the carpet and feel around for the vent opening.

     Cut into the center of the carpet over the opening with a utility knife. Continue cutting the carpet around the edges, being careful not to extend the cuts outside of the vent opening.

     Place the vent register into the opening. Pull out the vent and trim the carpet as necessary to ensure a proper fit.
