How to Choose the Color for Wall-to-Wall Carpet

Wall-to-wall carpet is often a dominant element of your home's style and décor. You may have one type and color of carpet throughout your home, or varying types and shades in different rooms. Color can be difficult to select, as there are so many possibilities to consider. Considerations include the style, face weight, pattern and feel of the carpet, in addition to the color. By following a few basic design principles, you can select the carpet color that works best for your home and allows for the maximum design possibilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the color schemes that fit your personal style. Monochromatic, neutral or contrasting are among the more popular styles. Review books or magazines to help you decide your style.

    • 2

Select a dominant color for the room where you will install the carpet. Pick two or three colors that fit one of the styles in Step 1, so you do not wind up with a mish-mash of colors.

    • 3

Use a neutral style if you prefer a contemporary look. Neutral colors include white, gray, beige, taupe, tan or cream. You can then select furniture or wall designs and paint that allow for easier redecorating.

    • 4

Choose a monochromatic color scheme for smaller rooms. These rooms will have varying shades in the same color, such as pink, blue, yellow, violet or pale greens. You can also hide imperfections in a room using this style.

    • 5

Create a color scheme that uses two neutral colors. For example, a light tan or cream carpet may go well with a pastel peach wall paint. You can then select two accent colors for furniture, curtains and wall pieces.

    • 6

Obtain carpet samples from a local supply store or carpet dealer, and compare the samples to your décor. For example, the curtains in your home may actually have an orange undertone to them, but some of your carpet samples may have blue undertones and would clash with your current décor. Select a carpet sample that will match your current furnishings, or decide if you want redecorate the room completely.
