How to Fix Torn Carpet

Tears or rips in a carpet need repairing to ensure the problem does not turn into a huge mess. For small tears, a dab of glue or some carpet staples can correct the problem. Larger tears need more attention. You can complete this project yourself with a few basic carpet tools. A seaming iron is necessary; you can usually rent this tool at a local equipment supply or hardware store. Repairing torn carpet saves you money on replacing the carpet or in hiring a professional to come in and patch up the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up on the carpet edges in the tear with a utility knife. Make sure the carpet surrounding the tear is loose.

    • 2

Cut a piece of carpet-seaming tape the length of the tear. Slide it beneath the tear, half the tape on both sides of the torn carpet.

    • 3

Plug in the seaming iron. Once it heats, carefully place it inside the carpet tear. Move the iron over the seaming tape to heat and activate the glue. Remove the iron carefully from the torn carpet.

    • 4

Press down on both sides of the carpet tear to ensure good carpet-to-tape connectivity. Place a heavy object onto the repaired carpet if necessary.

    • 5

Remove the heavy object and inspect the carpet to make sure the repair will be permanent. Fluff the carpet with your fingers to hide the repair.
