How to Size Carpet for a Foyer

Measuring for carpet is usually a simple process. However, special rooms or those with odd shapes can make it a bit more difficult to obtain an accurate measurement. Foyers, for example, can be difficult to measure. A little extra work and some basic math principles can help you here. When planning to carpet a foyer, you may also want to carpet another room in your home to save money. Carpet installers may add a charge to the project because it is a small job and less profitable for them.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a sketch of the foyer on a piece of paper. Divide the sketch into measurable squares or rectangles for easier measuring.

    • 2

Measure the length and width for each square or rectangle drawn on your sketch. Write the measurements next to this area on your paper.

    • 3

Multiply each areas individual length by its width to calculate the total area for each section. Sum all area calculations to get one figure. Add 10 percent to account for wasted material.

    • 4

Divide the figure from Step 3 by nine to convert the total square feet to square yards. This figure will represent the total carpet needed for the foyer project.
