DIY Carpet Edging

Carpet edging is the transition installed between carpet and another type of flooring, such as tile or wood floors. Most professional carpet installers use an edging material call a "Z-bar" which creates a smooth transition between flooring. Purchase a Z-bar at a local hardware supply store and install it yourself with a few basic tools. You should install the Z-bar prior to installing other types of flooring, as this will leave more space for you to work with. If this is not possible, be careful not to damage the other types of flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Z-bar under the carpet edge. Allow for 1 inch of carpet to extend past the Z-bar.

    • 2

Pull back the carpet carefully to expose the Z-bar. Use 3/4-inch screws and a screwdriver to attach the Z-bar to wood subfloors. Substitute short concrete nails and a hammer for cement subfloors.

    • 3

Tuck the excess carpet underneath the main carpet. Use a knee kicker to stretch and attach the carpet to the gripper teeth on the Z-bar strip.

    • 4

Hammer down on the top of the Z-bar to secure the carpet edge to the gripper teeth.
