Lift up a corner of the carpet and determine how the carpet is attached to the floor. If it is attached with tacks, you may need to use a flat pry bar to lift the corner of the carpet off the wood strip. Once a corner is detached from the strip, pull the carpet off the wood strip around the entire parameter of the room. If you are not going to put down new carpet, remove the wood strip with the flat pry bar.
Pull up enough of the carpet so you can get a 6-inch drywall knife under it, if the carpet is glued to the floor. Work the knife between the carpet and the floor to scrape the carpet off the floor. Loosen 2- to 3-foot sections of the carpet lengthwise across the room, then fold it back and loosen another section until the entire carpet is detached from the floor.
Cut the carpet into strips about three 3 feet wide the length of the room using a utility knife. Be careful not to mar the floor beneath the carpet with the knife if it is wood and you are not laying new carpet on top of it.
Roll the 3-foot sections of carpet as tight as you can and wrap twine around them to create manageable bundles to be disposed.
