Installation of Carpet Edges

Properly installed carpet edges help protect carpet from fraying and other potential damage. If the carpet meets up with a different flooring type, a carpet edge can also help prevent snags from people walking of the transition. Many professional installers use a device called a Z-bar carpet edge. You can install this on your own flooring if you need to install or replace a carpet edge. Local carpet supply stores or hardware stores sell Z-bar for do-it-yourself carpet installers.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull back on the carpet where you will install the Z-bar transition. Measure the opening with a tape measure.

    • 2

Transfer the measurement to the Z-bar. Cut the Z-bar to the appropriate length with a hacksaw.

    • 3

Attach the Z-bar into place using 3/4-inch nails and a hammer. Pull open the top metal cover for installing the carpet.

    • 4

Pull the carpet over the Z-bar carefully. Wear gloves to prevent injuring yourself on the carpet grippers. Tuck up to 1 inch of excess carpet underneath the main carpet.

    • 5

Hold the carpet in place and fold the top part of the Z-bar over the carpet. Lightly tap the Z-bar closed with a rubber mallet to complete the installation.
