Measure the area where you plan to install the carpet, and cut it to the appropriate size. Use a carpet cutter with a sharp blade for best results. Cut on a concrete surface or other area that can be scratched in case the blade goes too deep.
Clean the steel with a soap and water solution to remove any dirt, grease or dust that would interfere with glue adhesion. Dust off the back of the carpet to remove any small threads left from cutting.
Use a trowel to apply a layer of carpet glue to the steel. Spread it over the area evenly, ensuring that the entire area where the carpet will go is covered.
Press the carpet into place in the area of steel covered with adhesive. Run a push broom over the carpet to ensure firm contact with the glue. If you're padding a pole, tie rope around it in several places to keep the carpet stays in place while the glue sets up.
Allow adequate setting and drying time for the carpet glue, based on the instructions for the specific type you purchased.
Remove any loose fibers from the carpet, and vacuum if necessary.
