Checking what is beneath your carpet is not too difficult. You will often need to know what is under the carpet if you are looking to replace your current flooring. If you are looking to replace your carpet, you may want to know the current underlayment to ensure that you at least replace what you have currently on the floor. Once you peel back the carpet, you may need to rent a knee kicker from a local supply store to restretch the small segment of the carpet.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull back on one corner of the carpet.

Move the carpet back slowly so you have enough room to inspect what is beneath the carpet.

Restretch the carpet with a knee kicker if tack strips are present when you inspect what is beneath the carpet.
