How to Install PlasDECK Exterior Decking

PlasDeck is a synthetic boat decking that mimics the look of teak. Made of PVC, PlasDeck resists stains and wear. It never needs painting or oiling. The decking is designed for the do-it-yourselfer to install. You can arrange the deck in a design of your choice. Depending on the size of your boat deck, you'll need a day or two to prep and install PlasDeck decking.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand down any rough areas on your deck. You want your new decking to lay flat.

    • 2

Clean the entire deck area with rags soaked in denatured alcohol. The alcohol will remove dirt, grease and sanding grit.

    • 3

Install the margin pieces that fit around the edge of your boat deck first. Measure the margins and cut the decking to the appropriate length with the shears. To make precise mitered corners, lay the margin pieces on a table or floor, in the position they will be on deck. Overlap the ends of the pieces and mark the point where they overlap with a pencil. Slice down through both pieces with a razor knife, cutting along the pencil mark. Discard the excess material and you will have perfectly matching ends.

    • 4

Run a bead of sausage glue with the sausage glue gun down the area where you plan to install the margin pieces. Spread the glue with the notched trowel. Press the decking pieces firmly to the deck. Roll the decking pieces with the roller to seat them firmly.

    • 5

Measure and cut the center piece, or king plank, next. The king plank is a wider, raised section in the center of many boat decks. The edges of this section may be straight or may have scalloped, saw-toothed or other decorative edging. Trace the pattern for your king plank onto several sheets of newspaper taped together, then transfer the pattern to a sheet of PlasDECK. Cut out this section with vinyl shears.

    • 6

Apply sausage glue to the king plank and smooth the glue with the trowel. Lay the plank section in place and run the roller over it several times.

    • 7

Measure and cut the pieces of PlasDeck to fill in the rest of the deck. Arrange them in a design of your choosing. Trim the pieces with the razor knife.

    • 8

Apply the sausage glue to the deck and smooth it with the trowel. Press each piece of decking firmly into the glue and roll over the decking with the roller. Each piece overlaps the previous piece at the edge, with the edges linking together. Wipe away any excess glue with a rag moistened with denatured alcohol.

    • 9

Caulk the gap between the margin pieces and the rest of the decking. Apply masking tape or painter's tape on either side of this gap. Apply the caulk with a caulking gun. Push the caulk down into the gap with a scrap of decking. Wipe away excess caulk with a rag wet moistened with denatured alcohol. Remove the tape before the caulk dries.
