How to Wrap Fascia Board With Vinyl

Exterior vinyl cladding offers an attractive and economical way to side a house, protecting the wood beneath from rain, wind and harsh sunshine. Vinyl siding manufacturers provide a variety of trim and accessory pieces that mix or match siding styles, giving the house a professional finished look. Vinyl fascia covers the front of the fascia board and tucks over the bottom edge to prevent water from soaking the fascia board.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the vertical width of the fascia board, including the part covered at the top of the board by the gutter apron. Standard fascia board is around 5 1/2 inches wide, but it can vary.

    • 2

Lay out a vinyl fascia strip, which comes in 6-inch and 8-inch widths and is generally 12 feet long. Make a pencil mark on each end to match the width of the fascia board.

    • 3

Snap a chalk line between the marks. This is your cutline. Make sure that when you trim off the excess vinyl fascia, you cut off only the flat edge and leave the edge that has the “L” shape bend.

    • 4

Cut along the chalk line with aviation snips.

    • 5

Align the end of the vinyl fascia with the end of the fascia board and slide the flat end of the strip up and under the gutter apron. The bottom “L” shape bend should rest on the underside of the fascia board.

    • 6

Insert 2-inch roofing nails along the bottom lip of the vinyl fascia every 24 to 36 inches. At the very end of the “L” shape is a tiny lip that wraps under. This lip rests against the bottom of the fascia board. When nailing, do not drive the nail so deeply that the head of the nail crushes this lip.

    • 7

Cut and install the next strip of vinyl fascia in the same manner, overlapping the first piece by 2 inches.

    • 8

Install vinyl fascia on gable ends as well as on the horizontal roof edge. For gables, vinyl fascia installs the same way, but you will slip the vinyl strip under the metal roof edge instead of the gutter apron. Cut the bottom end of the fascia level with the bottom edge of the roof.
