How to Cut a Spline With a T&G Flooring Table Saw

A spline in woodworking is a joint type for framing. The spline is a cutout in the middle of the corners where two pieces of wood meet at a 90-degree angle. A small piece of wood is inserted into the cutout and held in place with wood glue. This type of joint prevents one of the edges of the frame's corner from moving away from the other edge. Using a tongue and groove flooring table saw to cut the spline is one way to guarantee the angle of the spline is correct.

Things You'll Need

  • 20-by-2-by-1 inch pine boards (2)
  • Flooring table saw
  • 1/4-inch-thick blade

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one end of two 20-by-2-by-1 inch pine boards to a 45-degree angle with the flooring table saw angle marks on the edge of the saw. These two 45-degree edges will make the corner of a frame, when placed together, to make a 90-degree angle.

    • 2

Set a frame edge on the table saw where the cut angle touches the table saw's surface. Clamp the board onto the table with the grey clamp on the edge of the table saw.

    • 3

Cut a 1/4-inch groove into the end of each board by 1/2-inch deep.

    • 4

Place wood glue on a 2-by-1-by-1/4-inch spline wedge on the broad sides and on two of the 1/4-inch edges.

    • 5

Insert the spline wedge into the opening on one end of a corner board.

    • 6

Set the two 20-inch boards together with the 45-degree cuts facing each other to make a 90-degree corner. The spline should snugly fit between the two boards,.
