DIY Membrane Roof

Choosing the right type of roofing material for your home involves many considerations, including cost, longevity of the materials and ease of installation. EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) membrane roofing is a type of synthetic rubber roofing membrane that offers many advantages for do-it-yourselfers. It is easy to install and can be used on top of existing roofing materials. Membrane roofing provides good protection against leaks and can last more than 25 years, according to the RoofHelp website. Proper installation is important to the membrane’s ability to withstand exposure to the elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the existing roof carefully, removing debris and loose material. Ensure that all decking is securely attached to the roof deck. Remove or grind smooth any sharp edges that can damage the membrane.

    • 2

Place membrane onto roof and unfold it to fit into position. The membrane should hang over the edges of the roof approximately three inches and turn up existing walls approximately 12 inches.

    • 3

Allow the membrane to relax for 30 minutes to reduce wrinkles.

    • 4

Fold the membrane over onto itself. While the material is resting, stir the adhesive for five minutes until the color is uniform.

    • 5

Apply the adhesive to the roof area and to the exposed area of the membrane. Work in sections that feel convenient for you. Do not apply adhesive to areas of the membrane that will be sealed later.

    • 6

Allow the adhesive to dry until it is tacky to the touch.

    • 7

Roll the membrane onto the adhesive surface and smooth with a shop broom. Work the broom slowly over the membrane to remove wrinkles and bubbling. Repeat for all sections of the roof.

    • 8

Overlap the seams a distance of approximately three inches.

    • 9

Fold back the edge three inches and apply membrane primer to both edges.

    • 10

Add seam tape to the edges and press into place. Roller the tape gently to aid adherence.

    • 11

Apply caulk to the edges of the seam to seal. Allow all materials to dry thoroughly.
