How to Metal Frame Walls

Metal frame walls are easy, inexpensive and convenient. While they cannot be used for weight-bearing work, for simply partitioning a space and hanging drywall, metal frame walls are an excellent choice. Layout and stud spacing for metal frame walls are the same as for wood walls, the only key difference is in installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the top and bottom channels. These are U-shaped pieces of metal you must screw to the floor and ceiling joists. Install them so that the walls of the U shape point toward the wall you will build.

    • 2

Insert the studs into the channels. You need one stud at the beginning and end of the wall, and more studs along the wall, spaced 16 inches apart. Each stud needs four screws, one on each side of the top and bottom channels. If you need to cut the studs to size, use metal snips.

    • 3

Snap plastic grommets into place on the hole pre-cut in the metal studs. These grommets will protect any electrical or plumbing work that needs to be installed in the wall.
