How to Glue Expanded Polystyrene onto a Concrete Block

Expanded polystyrene is a polymer used in several commercial applications, from the production of foam cups to insulation. Rigid EPS foam boards are available in a variety of sizes and are used to insulate several projects, including roofing, cold storage units and basements. Attaching your EPS foam board insulation to an existing concrete wall is accomplished with a special adhesive, which is available at home improvement and hardware stores.

  • Utility knife
  • Rubber gloves

  • 2 tablespoon liquid dish soap
  • 1 gallon warm water
  • Kitchen sponges

Instructions

      Cut the EPS boards to length for the project with a utility knife. Wear rubber gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, respirator and safety goggles to prevent skin irritation.

      Wipe the concrete surface with a mixture of 2 tablespoons liquid dish soap and 1 gallon warm water. Dampen a kitchen sponge with the mixture and use it to remove any dirt, debris or dust from the concrete. Rinse the soapy water with a separate damp sponge and allow the concrete to dry completely before continuing.

      Shake the can of EPS spray adhesive for 30 seconds to one minute. Holding the can 10 to 12 inches away from the concrete surface, apply a thin layer of the product. Allow the EPS spray adhesive to set for two minutes to allow the solvent vapors to evaporate, which prevents air bubbles.

      Center the EPS board over the spray adhesive and press down firmly to attach the board to the wall. Repeat this process on the remaining EPS boards.
