How to Remove Cupping From a Pine Board

Cupping is when the ends of the pine board are higher than the center of the board. This type f warping generally happens as a result of the board getting wet or because of high humidity. Correcting the cupping takes a little work and time because you have to recreate the atmosphere for cupping so that you can control the warping of the board. By doing this, you can correct and, in effect, remove the cupping that originally occurred to the pine board.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay some cardboard out on a flat surface, such as a driveway or patio floor -- it should be a place that gets direct sunlight. The cardboard should be able to fit the pine board on it. Once the cardboard is down, drench it in boiling water.

    • 2

Put your cupped board on the wet cardboard with the concave side down while the sun is shining on the area.

    • 3

Use a household steamer, such as a garment steamer, to go over the part of the board facing up. Go back and forth over it for 90 minutes.

    • 4

Remove the board and reapply boiling water to the cardboard. Flip the board when you put it back on the cardboard so the other side is down. Repeat the steamer usage for 90 minutes on the new side.

    • 5

Take the board off the cardboard and put it in a dry place that is free of humidity. Weight down the ends and center of the board with very heavy items, such as cinder blocks or other boards. Leave the board like this for two days, after which you can remove the weights and the board should no longer be cupped.
